Profiles
The women of the Orana — their work, their seasons, their hands. Artists, makers, healers, leaders, quiet achievers. We want to know who they are and what drives them.
Reflections
Personal essays on belonging, creativity, motherhood, career, grief, joy, identity. The kind of writing that makes someone feel less alone.
Gathering Recaps
You went to Women Who Hustle, a Full Moon circle, or the IWD Sunrise. Tell us what happened, what shifted, and what you'll carry forward.
Call-Outs
Events, markets, workshops, circles. If it's happening in the Orana and it's for women, we want to help spread the word.
Photo Essays
A strong series of images with minimal text. The festival, the landscape, the everyday moments that define life in the Orana.
Creative Work
Poetry, short fiction, interviews, audio pieces. If it captures the spirit of this region, we'll find a way to publish it.
GUIDELINES
A few things to know
before you pitch.
Word count: 500–1,500 words for essays. 200–400 for call-outs. Photo essays: 6–20 images with 50–100 words of context.
Original work only: We publish first-run content. If it's been published elsewhere, let us know and we'll consider it on a case-by-case basis.
You keep your copyright: We ask for publication rights only. You retain ownership of your work and can republish it elsewhere with credit to The Orana Woman.
Editing: All submissions are edited for clarity, tone, and length. We'll share edits with you before publication.
Payment: At this stage, The Orana Woman is a volunteer-run publication. We cannot pay contributors, but we promote your work across our channels and credit you prominently.
Response time: We aim to respond to all pitches within 14 days. If you haven't heard from us, feel free to follow up.
HOW TO PITCH
Send us a short email.
That's all it takes.
We don't need a formal proposal. Just tell us:
- What you want to write about (or share)
- Why it matters now
- Your connection to the Orana region
- A short bio (2–3 sentences)
- Any relevant links or writing samples
Attach your draft if you have one. Or send a paragraph summary if you're still shaping the idea. We're happy to workshop it with you.

Do I need to be a professional writer?
No. We publish first-time writers alongside experienced journalists. If you have a story and the willingness to tell it well, that's enough.
Can I write about something outside the Orana?
We prioritise stories with a clear connection to the Orana region, but we also publish work that speaks to the broader experience of regional women in Australia.
What if I only have an idea, not a draft?
Pitch the idea. We'll tell you if it fits, suggest angles, and help you shape it into something publishable.
Can I submit on behalf of someone else?
Yes, with their permission. We especially welcome submissions that amplify voices that are often unheard in regional media.
How often can I contribute?
As often as you have something worth saying. Some contributors publish monthly. Others once a year. There's no quota.
Do you accept sponsored content?
